eDotte - The Collaborative Catalog

FAQ @ eDotte

1. eDotte - whats that?
eDotte is a collaborative catalog which aims at bringing together all Useable Content on the web into a catalog format with a search facility.

2. What is Useable Content.
When we talk about Useable Content, we are referring to anything on the web thats informational/educational in nature. eBooks, tutorials, technical articles and anything else informative in nature and which might help someone else out there - thats what useable content is all about.

3. Don't search engines already index such content?
True, search engines index such content TOO. But then, search engines rely on automated crawlers to rank pages on the web. So very often when you perform a search on them, what turns out is a mixture of Useable/Non-Useable content.

4. How does eDotte address this concern.
eDotte's master catalog has been prepared by YOU. Every entry in the eDotte catalog is created by people who have read and appreciated the content in it.

Copyright

5. What is eDotte's stand on pirated content/books.
We have great regard for the hardwork of publishers and authors around the world. Unless a publisher/author of a content agrees to make a content available publicly, we wouldn't like to have it in eDotte.

6. How about copyrighted content.
eDotte holds only links to actual pages and does not cache any of those pages. So, the publisher and author are always credited. Content accessible through links on eDotte may or may not be copyrighted - so although you can go ahead and read it, make sure you check their copyright policies before quoting them elsewhere.

Collaborative Catalog

7. Why is eDotte called "The Collaborative Catalog"
eDotte's catalog has been built by the efforts of fellow eDotters. So its the result of a Collaborative effort.

8. I know of content thats good enough to be added to the eDotte catalog. Can I help?
Sure you can! eDotte is your catalog - go ahead and add content as long as it conforms to the above definition of useable content. The bottom menu of every page has a link to the "Add Content" page.

9. Do you monitor content added to the eDotte catalog.
We prefer not to intervene in the growth of the catalog. However, we request you to keep the catalog clean for the benefit of fellow eDotters.

10. Do I need to login to add content to eDotte.
eDotte believes in keeping its catalog easily accessible to eDotters all over the world - So eDotte does not require a login. We trust in you and want to keep eDotte an open catalog.

Effectively using the eDotte Catalog

11. Can I use wildcard (asterisk) characters to search the eDotte catalog.
eDotte's search mechanism supports wildcards. So "won*" in the searchBox would match "Alice in Wonderland"

12. What search modes does eDotte support
eDotte supports following 3 search modes currently.

               a. Plain Vanilla Text search - keywords in the searchBox are "AND"-ed

               b. Category search - CAT:x will fetch you entries from the category "x"
Eg: cat:lit will fetch content from the category "Literature"

               c. Time based search - time:x will fetch content added within x days
Eg: time:2 will fetch content added within the last 2 days

You can as well combine these criteria together. For example to search for content added within a week under the category "Software" you would type "time:1 CAT:SFT"

13. Is eDotte's search Case-Sensitive
eDotte's search is case insensitive. So "Wonderland" and "wonderland" will fetch you the same result.
